ARTYOU INSTALLATION – Essbare Skulpturen: Studierende der HGK Basel in Zusammenarbeit mit Sonja Alhäuser

15 - 22 April 2023
Overview

Students of the Basel Academy of Art and Design (HGK FHNW) were invited to use Artstübli as their studio and workshop, with the result of a one-week exhibition on site. As part of the CoCreate workshop week called «Food 3.0. Change the way, we taste», the students are developing edible sculptures in collaboration with German artist Sonja Alhäuser.

“The production of edible sculptures has been at the center of my artistic work for years. Together with the students, I would like to examine materials such as chocolate, marzipan, butter, but also cheese or meat for their creative potential and, in addition to taste, smell, consistency, also discuss the narrative dimensions. We will make chocolate objects in self-made molds and let them tell their story within a sequence of courses. (...) Towards the end of the project week, the sculptural works will be presented and consumed in the form of a performance.”

– Excerpt from the workshop description by Sonja Alhäuser

Sonja Alhäuser works in a variety of media, but her work focuses heavily on sculpture and installation, elaborately made from perishable materials such as butter, chocolate and other comestibles.

German art historian and curator Dr. Dirk Dobke writes about Alhäuser:

„Our pursuit of happiness, i.e. love, satisfaction, recognition and the associated enjoyment and desire are at the center of Sonja Alhäuser’s artistic work. The central theme of her art is pleasure as a life impulse and at the same time the associated inherent or at least always threatening failure. The eternal circle of life often begins gastrosophically with a pleasurable filling of the stomach and leads on to physical, sexual pleasure. And often it ended in tragedy or, in the worst case, death. In her work, Sonja Alhäuser describes the connection between food and desire and how culinary and physical self-absorption correlate in a variety of ways.“
