Nici Jost's artistic practice is consistently dedicated to the color pink; its characteristic features, history and its role in psychology, art, poetry, literature and politics. However, she not only works with pink as a controversial and divisive element of social and cultural associations; for the artist, pink is a socio-political lens that is able to polarize like no other color in the spectrum.
The exhibition “Bird and Flower Market” shows a staging of Jost's time as artist-in-residence at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai. In Chinese visual culture, the color pink is used in a different, culturally specific way. It reflects the bustling life of the city and its cultural diversity. The artist goes beyond the purely visual, creating a sensual dialog with Chinese aesthetics and philosophy.
Nici Jost was born in Banff in the Canadian province of Alberta. And grew up in Switzerland. After completing her apprenticeship as a photo assistant in Switzerland and studying photography at Nova Scotia Community College in Halifax, Canada, she worked as an intern for Pipilotti Rist from 2008 to 2009. She graduated with a Master in Fine Arts from the FHNW/HGK (Basel) in 2016.
Nici Jost's pink room installation “From West to East to Space” will take over the carpet and wall colors and create a supporting program that celebrates the 10th anniversary of the former gallery and the current art and cultural space Artstübli.
