In his current group of works, Cicatrice, Kostas Maros deals intensively with the landscape in Carrara, Italy. Years of quarrying white marble have changed parts of the region in an impressive and threatening way. From art to architecture, from Michelangelo to Alvar Aalto, half the world is subject to the fascination of "white gold", the marble from Carrara. The increasing demand for this valuable raw material has left timeless scars. Kostas Maros spent several weeks in the Apuan Alps, allowing the power and history of this ambivalent place to take effect on him and intensively exploring it. The resulting works convey this uncanny power of constantly changing nature in an impressive way. Maros uses the quarries of Carrara as a metaphor for the excessive global human intervention in nature: automation, scarcity of resources, concentration of wealth and the conflict between the environment and production.
